CARLYLEhas for many years housed a large collection of Horse drawn Carriages. We have used them all in Show Classes, historic displays, weddings and FEI Driving. There was a time when Australia did not have the "Modern" carriage made from the latest fabrics, instead we would use our Authentic carriages for all disciplines of carriage driving including the cross country marathon. Today the antique carriages are safely housed under their covers and the "Modern" Carriage is our everyday work horse and competition vehicle.

19th century Wicker Governess carThis carriage was used on a station at Deniliquin to transport the children to school. These carriages were designed for a governess to drive so as she had all children in her view.In an emergency she could exit the children through the rear door without fear of being run over. A Governess drove a very quiet pony as mostly they came to the stations with no driving skills. Our car has been fully restored by Bill Black, Coachbuilder of Emerald Victoria and boasts 5 full hides of leather in the diamond buttoning.Ruby Lawrence, 3rd Generation in the Governess Car |
19th century Ladies Spider PhaetonComplete with rear "Tiger" seat. This is a very old imported vehicle and has also been fully restored. We have enjoyed showing it, but would now happily sell it on to a new owner. Like many of our carriages, we have no further use for them as our concentration is on the Large Open Horse in FEI Driving.
19th Century Alexander Dog CartThis is a two wheeled vehicle made in South Africa. The name came from Princess Alexandra who designed the very large mud guard so as a lady would not dirty her dress as she mounted the carriage. We have recently had Bedford cord put on the seating. The family is very fond of this rarity.
Pony Piano Box BuggyThis dear little red buggy was used and owned by the doctor at Shepparton. Still in it's original colour of red. We showed extensively in it in the 70's and it has also seen the marathon course in the good old days. Needs restoring now but a family favourite. Made by Coffey's of Richmond.
Pony Whitechapel BuggyMade in Ballarat. This was my first vehicle and I had it restored by Gerald Delahunty in Mt Alexander Road, Moonee Ponds. I showed a stallion in the buggy, the first time harness classes were included in the Stud Pony Show, Akoonah Park, Berwick 1968. This buggy has seen many weddings, including my own.
Horse Abbott BuggyMade in SA and fully restored with varnished wood. This is a very good example of the Abbott, a vehicle commonly used for transport in Australia. We have shown this vehicle very successfully and it comes with shafts and a pole.
Pony BreakThis long shafted break was used to break ponies in, at Gembrook when they were still using horses to bring the logs out of the bush. The vehicle is restored.I haven't seen another as small.
Pony Dog Cart 4 wheelsI bought this at a clearing sale near Bendigo and had Bill Black restore it, once again a rare vehicle. The carriage has a full lock and as such would be suitable as a presentation carriage for a pony team. We showed a pony pair in it. | |
English GigMade by Woodbeer Perriton in the UK. This Gig is amazing. The vehicle was made and imported in 1976. In 1978, I used it to win the Australian Championship at Young , cross country and all. In 2002 it was shipped back to the UK for our daughter Esther to use with her Australian Pony Adelphi Golden Gown. The Gig then went to Florida in the USA where, with the same pony, it completed a full show season. Now it has been brought back to Australia and lives at Toolleen. | ![]() |
![]() | MODERN CARRIAGESAustralian Carriage Co. Marathon CarriageI believe this to be the only one of its kind made in this country. The carriage was made to European design for a single and has been a ripper. Started off as irridescent purple and now it has changed hands to Elizabeth, it is lime green and orange. We love it and it continues to work for us. |
Warco German Presentation CarriageThis Spider Phaeton has been especially made for the FEI Dressage and Cones Phase. Fitted with all the latest technology, it complies with FEI Competition standards and looks the number. | ![]() |
Warco German Training Carriage. This is our work horse and can be seen around the local roads at Tarrington most days. Designed for a large horse, with groom seats at the rear, disc brakes and best of all Pneumatic tyres which make the long hours of training more comfortable.
